Director Pratibha Parmar in a interview with the San Francisco Chronicle talked about her inspiration to make the film was her partner.
"I wrote the story, which, in the main, was inspired by falling in love with my partner," "Her background was that she grew up in an Indian family who owned a restaurant, and we met each other when we agreed to cook dinner for a group of Indian friends."
