Lesbos Sues Lesbians

The Island of Lesbos is not for Lesbians!

A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.

Three islanders from Lesbos — home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women — have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.

One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.

"My sister can't say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou. "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said.

The three plaintiffs are seeking to have the group barred from using "lesbian" in its name and filed a lawsuit on April 10. The other two plaintiffs are women.

"This is not an aggressive act against gay women," Lambrou said. "Let them visit Lesbos and get married and whatever they like. We just want (the group) to remove the word lesbian from their title."

Lambrou said the word lesbian has only been linked with gay women in the past few decades. "But we have been Lesbians for thousands of years," said Lambrou, who publishes a small magazine on ancient Greek religion and technology that frequently criticizes the Christian Church.

According to Wikipedia: The word lesbian dates back at least to 1732 and lesbianism appears in the 1870 Oxford English Dictionary meaning sexual orientation rather than a reference to Sappho and inhabitants of Lesbos. Lesbian as an adjective is in the 1890 Oxford English Dictionary and as a noun by 1925. Until the early twentieth century lesbian was interchangeable with Sapphist.

Ellen Nominated For Daytime Emmy

Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, as well as the ladies of The View have just been nominated for top TV host in the Daytime Emmy race.

The show has now earned a total of 21 Daytime Emmy Awards during its first four seasons. This years Winners will be announced June 20 in Los Angeles.

The Advocate: Let’s start with what’s hot, why the silence on gay issues? You’ve only done one other interview with the LGBT press. I know people wish they were hearing more from you.

Sen. Obama: I don’t think it’s fair to say silence on gay issues. The gay press may feel like I’m not giving them enough love. But basically, all press feels that way at all times. Obviously, when you’ve got limited amount of time, you’ve got so many outlets. We tend not to do a whole bunch of specialized press. We try to do general press for a general readership.

But I haven’t been silent on gay issues. What’s happened is, I speak oftentimes to gay issues to a public general audience. When I spoke at Ebenezer Church for King Day, I talked about the need to get over the homophobia in the African-American community, when I deliver my stump speeches routinely I talk about the way that antigay sentiment is used to divide the country and distract us from issues that we need to be working on, and I include gay constituencies as people that should be treated with full honor and respect as part of the American family.

So I actually have been much more vocal on gay issues to general audiences than any other presidential candidate probably in history. What I probably haven’t done as much as the press would like is to put out as many specialized interviews. But that has more to do with our focus on general press than it does on … I promise you the African-American press says the same thing.

The magazine shows photos of O'Donnell in what appeared to be an argument with her son Parker claiming that she is abusive and stated she manhandled her 12 year old son and was probably subjecting her other three children to emotional damage by verbally abusing her son in front of them.

First of all, don't dictate to me what I have to declare about myself. It's about setting boundaries. If you open up a door to your whole life, once that door's open, you can't shut it. You can't open it up for some parts and keep it closed for others.

It really boils down to this: I want to please everybody. I want every guy and every girl thinking that I'm singing these songs to them, because I am. If I make a hard, fast case on where I stand then that takes away a lot of the fantasy. Music entails a lot of fantasy. I want people to be able to go there with me. Some people might think it's a cop-out. I don't care. That's how I feel.

What The Gays Are Doing This Summer

Cyndi Lauper will take her True Colors tour back on the road this summer.

Lauper, whose tour last year promoted gay rights, will open the second go-round in Boston on May 31 alongside fellow headliners Rosie O'Donnell and the B-52s, it was announced Wednesday.

Carson Kressley (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) will host the 24-city event, which winds down in Morrison, Colo., on July 5.

"The tour is a non-stop five-hour music party with a message," Lauper, 54, said. "This year, the party only gets bigger and our message to the fans is to get out and vote in November."

Guest artists such as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Regina Spektor, the Indigo Girls and Wanda Sykes will perform at various cities throughout the tour.

Jodie Foster Stalker Arrested

Jodie Foster's stalker was arrested Tuesday on charges of mailing a bomb threat to a southern California airport, reports Reuters.

Michael Smegal is accused of mailing the threatening letter to the Van Nuys Airport in early December. According to an affidavit, the letter in question was one of more than 100 similar letters sent to various celebrities, business executives, airports and other locations around Los Angeles from September 2007 to January 2008.

The affidavit goes on to say that in 2004, Foster herself began receiving anonymous letters from Massachusetts, and that in 2005, Smegal told police he was behind them and promised to stop.

Showtime has renewed The L Word for a sixth and final season, which will make it one of the premium network's longest-running series.

"People love their animals so much so that they put little clothes on them and necklaces and booties and things like that. And if you love your animal, then you should feed them something that's not dangerous for them. There's a lot of poisonous stuff that they’re putting in a lot of that food, those by-products."

If you were a politician, what would your pet policy be?
When asked if Ellen were to be a politician, what would be her pet policy, she responded, "My pet policy would be to love them and give them as much respect as you would give any living thing and treat them kindly. They’re innocent little souls that are filled with unconditional love. And we should give them the same."

Drew Giving Away $1 Million

Drew Barrymore is donating $1 million to charity.

Drew gave the gift on Monday to the World Food Programme and the funds have been earmarked to feed thousands of schoolchildren in Kenya.

"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life, It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future. I urge everyone — everywhere — to help WFP 'Fill the Cup' for hungry children, and make hunger history."

Do you remember Ashleigh Aston Moore mostly known for the Movie Now & Then staring Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Rosie O'Donnell, Demi Moore?

Ashleigh died of a accidental heroin overdose in Vancouver on Monday December 10, 2007. She was 26 years old and apparently a Lesbian.

Ashleigh's facebook profile lists that she was seeking a woman. A friends myspace memorial page has a message from a exlover.

Telegraph.co.uk is reporting that sperm cells have been created from a female human embryo in a remarkable breakthrough that suggests it may be possible for lesbian couples to have their own biological children.

The University of Newcastle team that has achieved the feat is now applying for permission to turn the bone marrow of a woman into sperm which, if successful, would make the method more practical than with embryonic cells.
